Malaysia’s colonial past
is depicted in the numerous old buildings that are still in existence in
various parts of the country.. There are many mission schools and shop
buildings that still bear the architecture designs of a bygone era. One such
building is the renowned Kellie’s Castle, a Moorish styled manor located on a
ridge beside a meandering river near the town of Batu Gajah, Perak, a state
within 3 hours of drive from Kuala Lumpur. Decades have gone by but this
structure, having withstood the test of time, remains intact.
Many draw similarity in
Kellie’s intention to build the castle for his beloved wife, Agnes, to that of
Shah Jahan’s , who built the famous Taj Mahal for his wife, Mumtaj. There is
certainly a profound feeling of romanticism shrouding Kellie’s Castle , from
its very design right down to the selection of its tiles and brick, every
minute detail carefully drawn.
.
Perhaps the reason this
majestic manor has survived the ravages of time is, none other than, to
symbolically remain as a testament of Kellie Smith’s love for his wife
